BY THE EDITOR

If you’re among our readers who have just finished Dawn of the Clans, you’re probably curious about what’s been happening with the modern Clans since the battle against the Dark Forest. To help all our readers get a good start on the sixth series of Warriors, we’ve put together this rundown of the most important characters in A Vision of Shadows. Enjoy!

Alderpaw

The timid son of Squirrelflight and Bramblestar lacks his sister’s bold certainty, his mother’s ferocity and impulsiveness, and his father’s strength of ambition. His early training as a warrior apprentice was filled with disappointment and doubt as he failed to improve in any of the skills his mentor tried to teach him. Such an anxious, self-doubting young tom might despair of ever finding his place in his Clan. But there is a quiet strength to this cat’s heart that even he may not yet recognize, and when StarClan calls on him to fulfill a unique destiny and right an ancient wrong, it may be just what he needs to prove the strength he held inside him all along.

Needlepaw

This cat is everything that Alderpaw is not. Where he’s soft and compassionate, Needlepaw is all sharpness and witty retorts. Where Alderpaw tries his best to honor his Clans and live up to their expectations of him, Needlepaw seems as independant as a rogue, always questioning and jeering at any rule or authority figure she deems unworthy of her respect. She’s confident, defiant, and friendly in a way that has her pulling cats into her adventures with her but rarely leaves them knowing her any better than when they’d started. But underneath all of her bravado lurks a lonely, hurting young cat who just longs for the love Clan life promised but never delivered – and hurt like that has a way of swinging its claws at everyone around it and tearing down the things it longs for most.

Twigkit

One of two kits found by Alderpaw and Needlepaw on their way back to the lake, Twigkit was the kit chosen to remain in ThunderClan while her sister was taken to live in ShadowClan. Twigkit arguably got the far better end of that deal – her Clanmates welcomed her, her adoptive mother Lilyheart treated her with a true mother’s love, and Alderpaw was beside her with love and encouragment every step of the way. But even with the care of her Clan around her, a longing for the family she’d never had a chance to know, both the mother she’d lost and the sister she’d been ripped away from, burned inside of Twigkit. Will this bright, eager young cat find her place within the Clan that raised her, or will the call of her blood ties lead her elsewhere?

Violetkit

When Violetkit was chosen to be taken to live in ShadowClan, she was doomed to a lonely fate among Clanmates who barely tolerated her in a deeply divided Clan where the young flaunted the rules and the old barely seemed to care enough to stop them. A lack of love from such an early age gnawed a desperate, painful hole in the young kit’s heart. With a foster mother who showed little love for her and her only kin kept from her by a border, Violetkit was primed to cling to the first cat to show her the slightest scraps of affection. But will that cat be someone with Violetkit’s best interests at heart? Will this lonely young cat ever find her place in a world that seems determined to ignore her?

Darktail

When we first meet Darktail, he claims to be the leader of the long-lost SkyClan, but it soon comes to light that he’s something far darker and more dangerous than he pretends to be. A deep hatred lies in this cat’s heart, and for reasons unknown, he seems determined to rain death and misery upon the Clans. While many cats see the danger such a cat can bring, others are ready to shake things up for the Clans, no matter the cost – and some cats will find themselves caught in the middle. What sort of leader will Darktail make for a vulnerable young cat caught up in his crusade against the Clans? And where did his burning hatred for the Clans come from in the first place?

Tree

This friendly loner first met Needlepaw early into her apprenticeship, when an owl injured her and carried her far from her Clan. Though he pretends at aloofness, a deep loneliness gnaws at his heart, a loneliness that echoes Needlepaw’s own. When Needlepaw’s Clanmates send him away, it doesn’t seem likely that the lonesome tom would have much more to do with the Clans again. But fate is a funny thing, and whether he likes it or not, his paws may find themeslves drawn towards the Clans again in a way he never expected.
