Flamepaw
A failed warrior assessment at the start of the story is only the latest of worries troubling Flamepaw’s life. Named for his famous kin Firestar despite his coal-black pelt, constantly comaped to his famous ancestor and never just appreciated for who he is, and longing for a closer relationship with his mother and yet wary of it at the same time after grief kept them apart in his early moons, Flamepaw feels deeply unhappy in a Clan that doesn’t seem to understand him. He has flaws of his own – he can be stubborn, and impulsive, and he tends to let his resentment build – but his heart is true, and his Clanmates don’t always let themelsves see that when all they see is a cat failing to live up to their lofty expectations. This lonely young tom longs for a cat, or a Clan, that would appreciate him for himself alone, not for what everyone else has decided to pin to his name.

She is careful, a bit of a worrier, and wants nothing more than to be a good and loyal warrior who sticks to the rules. While she can be a bit unsure of her footing in her personal relationships, her steady dedication and hard work has earned the respect of her Clan. But when her best friend Lightleap starts becoming more reckless and unhappy, and her relationship with her hopeful future mate Blazefire starts to feel less certain, Sunbeam will have to ask herself what it is she truly wants, and whether the cats around her understand and respect her as much as she might deserve – and whether she might have to look beyond the border, and beyond the strict expectations of the rules and of her family, to find what she desires.

Sparkpelt
Alderheart’s littermate, the daughter of Squirrelflight and Bramblestar, and the spitting image of the lost, revered Firestar, Sparkpelt once met every challenge before her with a spark that matched her fiery name. That was until her beloved mate, Larksong, died in front of her mere moments after giving birth to their kits, one of whom also perished. The spark in this fiery she-cat’s heart also seemed to die that day, and she spent the early part of her kits’ lives so sick in her grief that she was unable to connect with them. While she was eventually able to heal and start participating more in her kits’ lives, that disconnect remained, especially with her son Flamepaw. Sparkpelt wants nothing more than to see her son live up to his famous name and be a warrior to make his Clan proud, but while she loves him, she doesn’t always understand him, and when he makes a choice that Sparkpelt can’t understand or respect, the divide between them will only deepen. Will this mother and son, first divided by forces neither could control, now kept apart by hurt and uncertainty, ever find a way back to each other agan?

Berryheart
As a young warrior, Berryheart had a rebel’s heart. Her daughter Needletail was among the apprentices who rebelled against Rowanstar and left to join Darktail, and Berryheart soon followed. She scorned Rowanstar’s apparent weakness as a leader, and looked to Darktail for strength. But when Darktail showed his true colors as a bloodthirsty tyrant and Needletail was lost at his claws, Berryheart learned her lesson – and that lesson was, “never trust an outsider”. She dedicated herself to being the most loyal warrior she could for ShadowClan, instilling the same lesson in her new litter of kits, and was determined to forever protect ShadowClan from any threat from without. But when the warrior code changes to allow cats to switch Clans for love more easily, will Berryheart be able to stop seeing enemies in those who must now be her Clanmates? Or will her obsession with protecting ShadowClan from outside threats prove to be the greatest threat of all?

Curlfeather
This respected RiverClan warrior has been around since the death of Leopardstar and the days of the Great Battle, and has seen some of RiverClan’s hardest times. She was one of the cats taken prisoner by Darktail when he raided RiverClan’s camp, only escaping through sheer luck alongside her mother Duskfur, and she lost her beloved mate Jayclaw before their kits left the nursery. Her kits are now her greatest treasure, and she is determined to help Frostpaw achieve her destiny of becoming a great medicine cat of RiverClan. Frostpaw adores her mother, even when she worries about whether she can live up to Curlfeather’s great expectations of her, and relies on her mother’s counsel and encouragement.
