The revised Warrior Code
Learn the new order of the warrior code after the events of River!

The code is like a living thing,” Leafpool chimed. “It changes and grows as it needs to. - A Light in the Mist
How chaotic would life by the lake be without the moral guidance of the warrior code? The cats of Warriors get a glimpse of an answer to this question during the events of The Broken Code arc, in which they are faced with a problem no cat could have anticipated—the return of Ashfur, posing as Bramblestar. Taking a hard-line stance against any and all breaches of Clan law, Ashfur/Bramblestar insists on sometimes severe punishment for transgressions, like forbidding Spotfur’s clanmates from speaking to her for a quarter moon, sending both Lionblaze and Sparkpelt into exile, and forcing Twigbranch to catch twenty pieces of prey (but then exiling her anyway).
Amid this fraught, tumultuous period, some cats begin to ponder the “sanctity” of the Code; they begin to ask questions of themselves and it. It has guided the Clans by the lake—and before that, the Clans of the forest territories—for countless generations, but as the Clans grow in number, with the cats’ lives becoming more and more complicated, there have been times when the warriors’ faithful adherence to the code might have caused more problems than it solved. ThunderClan’s unease about “Bramblestar’s” suddenly curious and alarming behavior might not have grown into chaos had the thirteenth rule in the warrior code not given such reverence to a leader’s word. Imagine how different things would have been in ShadowClan if its warriors had felt emboldened to challenge Brokenstar; or if they had rejected the leadership of the first Tigerstar? A leader having the final say on important decisions is useful in imposing a structure on a Clan, but the history of the Clans tells us that not every cat who gets nine lives is worthy of the honor.
And in the wake of the terrible events of The Broken Code, the cats begin to wonder: If the thirteenth rule can be discarded, what else about the code might need amending? StarClan tasks them with figuring out new ways to handle such problems as cats wishing to switch Clans, and what to do if a leader falls short of the standards expected of them. They have three moons to amend a Code that has been in place for many, many lifetimes. It is a daunting challenge—but every Clan is so shaken by the havoc wrought by the impostor, they are determined to make sure the rules are ones that they can all live by. As we see in A Light in the Mist, the most important rules are quickly agreed, but in the books to come, we will see the Clans finalize the new Warrior Code by which all cats will faithfully abide.
We previously forgot to add the rule about deputies being required to have trained one apprentice, so we have updated the article to add that rule back into the code. We have also updated the code to add the two new laws decided upon in our newest release, River.
The New Code
- Defend all the Clans, even with your life. Your first loyalty is to your Clan, but all cats who follow the warrior code are your allies. Each Clan must ensure that no other Clan falls.
- Nevertheless, each Clan is proud and independent, with traditions that must always be respected.
- An honorable warrior does not need to kill other cats to win their battles, unless they are outside the code, or it is necessary for self-defense.
- Elders, queens, sick or injured cats and kits must be fed before apprentices and warriors. Unless they have permission, apprentices may not eat until they have hunted to feed the elders.
- A Gathering of all five Clans is held at the full moon during a truce that lasts for the night.
- No warrior can neglect a kit in pain or danger, even if the kit is from a different Clan.
- A kit must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice.
- The deputy will become Clan leader when the leader dies, retires, or is exiled.
- After the death, retirement, promotion (to a leader status), or exile of the deputy, the new deputy must be chosen before moonhigh.
- If a Clan member believes that their leader is no longer leading with honor and integrity, they can challenge them. Three-quarters of the Clan members, including their medicine cats, must agree. Their objections will then be presented to the leaders of the other Clans. If the other leaders agree, all medicine cats will request that StarClan remove the leader’s remaining lives and give them to the deputy. These objections cannot be raised by the deputy.
- A warrior or medicine cat may switch their allegiance from one Clan to another but must meet a set of conditions. The cat wishing to change Clans must perform a task of their intended Clan’s choosing. If they succeed, it will be deemed StarClan’s will that they change Clans, and their request will be granted.
- Prey is killed only to be eaten. Give thanks to StarClan for its life.
- Newly appointed warriors will keep a silent vigil for one night after receiving their warrior name.
- A cat cannot be made deputy without having mentored at least one apprentice.
- A warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet.
- Boundaries must be checked and marked daily. Challenge all trespassing cats — but a Warrior must always remember that all cats follow the warrior code.
But, as Leafpool once said, the Code is a living thing, with still more growing to do. The cats were tasked by StarClan with solving two problems created by the old rules, but well before the three moon deadline has passed, the Clans have significantly revised the whole Code, before they’ve solved the problem of inter-Clan romance, and what to do in the event of a Clan falling under the influence of an Evil Leader. These are huge questions, and the cats of the Lake will need all the time they have been granted, to answer them…
